Actually, you could be right. Take a look at this, quite an early live recording I think.

There are some great fretless bass lines on many Talk Talk songs but I always thought It's My Life was played on a MM Stingray.

Fender Jazz fretless – pro usage in pop/rock ?

The Fender Jazz fretless is one of the most popular fretless basses around but outside of the jazz-fusion arena you don’t seem to see many. Can you name many professional pop/rock bassist use them ?

Here’s another tone from a fretless jazz, this time it’s Mike Mills of REM playing the song Animal from 2003. He’s better known as a Precision bass player and in later tours plays this song on a fretless Precision but here he gats a Precision type tone from a fretless Jazz. My guess is he’s favourin...

Hi FretLessSince6, I agree that a lot has been done in the studio to get the particular tones, even for the live track there's been a lot of post production work. Reading an interview in Bass Player, Guy Pratt playing with Gilmour uses Status half wounds on a Lakalnd fretless. It’s a fuller, darker ...

Haw can I achieve these tones?

I think this is a great fretless tone. Guy Pratt playing a passive Lakland fretless.

I can't work out if he's favouring the bridge pickup and boosted the bass, or got both pickups maxed and boosted the mids. What do you think ?

Re: Buzz

I have a similar problem. The G-string on my fretless Jazz has no sustain compared to the other strings. This is my 1st fretless so I am pretty much in the dark. You guys have already given me a lot to look at. Is this a common problem? What should I check out 1st? Love this site, by the way. - D G...

Anyone tried Elites flatwound strings? What is the tone like? How does the tension compare to other flats?

Thanks for the replies.

The mids on my amp are at 400 hz, and if I engage the mid shift they are at 1 khz. I also use an MXR M80 when DI’ing and the mids on that are at 850 hz. Which mid frequency work best on a passive fretless?

Fretless Jazz EQ and tone settings

I know there is no right or wrong way of achieving a good fretless tone, it’s down to the individual, but as a general rule how should I EQ my bass and amp to get the best tone? I’m using a standard Fender Jazz fretless with flatwound strings and a Trace Elliot combo. How do you recommend setting th...

A dead spot is when the note has no sustain and fades very quickly, just like putting a sponge on the string. If it’s buzzing it’s more likely to be a small bump or ridge on the fretboard. Try running your fingers over the affected area to see if you feel anything. If you look along the fretboard do...

I have a fretless Jazz and had a similar issue. When it was about 18 months old I took it to a tech who planed the neck. I don't know if it was just the neck settling down but I had 1 or 2 bumps just above the 12th fret. Plays like a dream now.
