I started out with frets and first played fretless many years later. Start getting the roots, 5ths and octaves in tune up and down the neck. After that, just play it. You gotta pay more attention to finger placement, but as you go along it all gets more "automatic" and then one day you realize how m...

I had little white dot stickers on one of mine for awhile, on the edge of the neck, not really visible to anyone else.

On the G&L I de-fretted, I very carefully painted dots on the edge at each fretline, again only visible to the player.

Good pick on the G&L. They really sing with no frets.

DR Black Beauties

I'm running DR Black Beauties on my fretless G&L with rosewood board.
Low action, easy playing. They sound good, feel good, and don't mark it up so bad.

I have Elixirs on the Peavey Axcellerator, but they look like they need a shave.

Tried the Gary Willis Markleys, but they were like round files.

I always encourage people to learn to do their own set up

Doing my own set ups is the only way I can get my basses to feel right. (To me) I had to learn the hard way, since I lived in the boondocks and there wasn't much information available. It wasn't until good old Dan Erlewine began writing little blurbs for Guitar Player that much of anything in the re...

What you both said.

If I could add just one thing:

Everyone finds out how good both your time and pitch are when the drummer doesn't show up.

Many moons ago I had a '71 Jazz with DiMarzio J-bass pickups and a Badass II bridge. It was my warhorse for many years.

I had to sell it when I came down with 5 string disease.

You're all very welcome. I feel like I rediscovered the instrument when I got bit by the fretless bug a few years back, and wanted to share some of that joy with others who might be also thinking about going fretless. And as an added benefit, I think my sense of pitch has gotten better since I becam...

Sure.
Just watch out for flying splinters.

One thing I like about fretless is that most fretless players aren't doing so much of that nick-nack-slappety-whack stuff. Not that it's a bad thing, but like any effect, some people don't know when not to use it.

Frank's fret heater, more on the poly, etc.

Here's a link to Frank Ford's fret heater idea: http://www.frets.com/FRETSPages/Luthier/Tools/FretGun/fretgun.html Send Ol' Frank a thank you if you use his idea. I used mine with the tip ends spread out to where I heated the whole fret at once. It works. On the Poly coating, I used the satin Wipe O...

Defretting for dummies like me

De-fretting for dummies like me. The first thing to consider is whether you are capable of doing this modification. Read through these instructions first. It’s not basic woodworking, but not exactly brain surgery, either. If you have done precision metal work or woodworking with good results, then I...

Boz Burrell on the original Bad Company recordings.

I knew I wanted a sound like that before I knew he played a fretless.

Every fretless player needs to give him a listen.

So sad he's no longer with us.
