Hmmm, that is a disaster. I'm wondering why it didn't adhere/cure at the wood. A couple of ideas... The wood of the fingerboard may have been very oily. Woods such as Rosewood. For others interested in doing this modification it might be a good idea to seal the grain before applying polyurethane. Sa...

Thanks for your contribution to FretlessBass.com !!! Good info. When doing a polyurethane polish you will not be able to preserve the sheen and gloss of the top wet coat. But you can restore it. I assume that like me your top coat is not absolutely perfect due to dust in the air so there are some ti...

Fretless or Fretted - Which Gives Greater Joy?

What is your opinion. Fretless or Fretted. Which gives greater joy? Feel free to go off topic and describe other facets of fretless vs. fretted. I'm also interested to know your view of the continued viability of Fretless Bass considering that Pino Paladino, and others, have dropped the instrument a...

SWR Marcus Miller GoLight 4x10 I traded in my 105 pound Eden D410XLT for the Golight sealed cab. I am VERY happy with the weight difference. Sounds good too, less boomy yet still has very audible bass sound. Projection is fine but different than a ported box. I would say the dispersion is better, le...

Ebonol = Good for Fretless, and inexpensive. Looks like the MTD Kingston Artist fretless basses are a serious contender in the under $3000 category. Some other Asian basses such as Cort, Conklin GT, Fender Squire, more... Also have Ebonol fingerboards. If you can find one with a really straight neck...

Congratulations on the new family member! Modulus makes great instruments, my Q5 (modified) is a tone monster and favorite fretless bass. I too had problems getting used to 5 string basses. I found myself aiming for a G and hitting the D. This went on for about two years until I finally got over bei...

I thought that I would add a few words about why a good fretless bass is not necessarily just an electric bass without frets. Some fretted basses do convert into good fretless when defretted, ask Jaco. Although if we were able to interview him today I think he would admit that he had to work with th...

Here is a link to an excellent YouTube multi-part comprehensive series on defretting by Jason at GuitarLab. The best I've seen so far, this guy knows fretless.

Problems with notes choking, fretting out, buzzing, muted, or wolf tones, may be traced to any of four basic problems. A defect in the neck or fingerboard. Improper, maladjusted, or moving setup (most common). Climatic changes. Bad strings (rare). A nut grooves set high should not cause problems by ...

Your nut height is about right for a fretless instrument. I set mine even lower at around the thickness of a business card, approx. 1 mm with the larger strings having slightly more gap between the fingerboard and string. You didn't mention how your neck relief is set and the action height as set at...

Welcome to FretlessBass.com and welcome to the fretless community.
Your remarks are valid and very interesting, thanks.

From what you say, it sounds like you already possess the right instincts to become a great bassist. I hope that the fretless continues to excite the same way it does me.
