Well, I have lot of fretless albums favorites: I would start with the mighty Uzeb, especially "noisy nights" , "fast emotion" and "world tour"...Alain Caron is on fire! some others must have are Jaco's first album and Weather Report's "black market" and "heavy weather" with Jaco on both and Alphonso Johnson on "black..." '70 fretless stuff with Chick Corea's "secret agent" (featuring Bunny Brunel) and with "masques" by Brand X (with Percy Jones on bass). In the pop field I like Paul Young's first albums (Pino Palladino!!) and Lou Reed's "live in Italy" featuring Fernando Saunders...We mustn't forget Yellowjackets and the great Jimmy Haslip, my favorites are "shades", "politics" and "the spin".
Marcus Miller plays some nasty fretless on his solo "the sun don't lie" and on "double vision" by Bob james/David Sanborn. The list could go on forever, but I want to mention also "illicit" by Tribal Tech (with Gary Willis), "beyond words" by Mark Egan, "momentum" by Bunny Brunel, Alain Caron's "le band" and a metal album , "focus" by Cynic, featuring Sean Malone...

Kai Ekhardt is a monster! I remember especially a couple of great albums he played on: "Mississipi Kights live" by Billy Cobham and "live at the Royal Festival Hall " with John McLaughlin.
He has also a killer slap/chords technique on the fretted bass...

Yep, Richard Bona is another monster player on both axes, plus he sings and plays percussion and acoustic guitar...his playing is great especially on "world tour" by the Zawinul Syndicate (Victor Bailey too on this one!),"beyond words" by Bobby McFerrin and "spaces revisited" by Larry Coryell (Coryell, Bona, Bireli Lagrene and Billy Cobham...what a line-up!)...even if he doesn't play fretless bass my favorite bassist/singer is probably Mark King, what a groove boys!

New from Steve Bailey

New solo CD by Steve Bailey --- So Low

Available from CD Baby $9.99 MP3

And it's 100% fretless!

Really impressive, right up there with Alain Caron but with perhaps a more American sensibility.
