Action setup for slapping

All,
Great site. I think I read all the posting on "slap and action" and didn't see an answer.
I am really enjoying playing fretless and have started learning to slap. I have seen lots of fretted slapping on YouTube like Fred Frizz's Fretless Slap Bass Rock demo, so I know it's possible.
Here's the problem. After allot of practice and fiddling with knobs, I can get a good percussive sound on open strings with a nice sustained note afterwards. Cool...well the B rattles a bit on the fret board.
Now...when I try to play a non-open note (can I say "fretted note" on this site?? ) I get a thunk, a thud, a harmonic, a thunky harmonic, a whack..tried all kinds of slap positions up and down neck. Is my action too low?
