I see alot of posts about how to get this sound or that one.
when playing fretless bass, things change your tone like hand placement, pickup choice and tone knob selection.
it's mostly in your hands. so if you play bass and you like getting many tones as apposed to one tone, use your hands and knobs.
you will find the way to many things you thought were impossible without help like effects.
but then there are effects. chorus, compression, phaser, tremolo, octave under etc.
I think most fretless players go fretless because they don't want limitations.
This is why less equals more. not having frets will at first make you more aware of your position. once you've mastered this then you're more free than most other intruments.
You can get any sound with this instrument. except the slap against nickel from a fretted bass but you still can slap none the less. it's just a bit different.
Anyway fretless = freedom and freedom is always better than limitation.
