Mark Egan – On recording his newly released CD entitled As We Speak

I have just finished recording a trio CD with drummer Danny Gottlieb and guitarist John Abercrombie. The session was at my studio, Electric Fields in Warwick, NY. The compositions were mostly written in the last few months specifically for these players. I’m a long time admirer of John Abercrombie’s guitar playing from all the ECM recordings and from touring opposite his group while with the Pat Metheny Group. Danny and I are longtime friends and have played together in various groups for over thirty years.

I’ve always enjoyed playing in a trio format, which leaves a lot of room for all the players to be creative. Over the last four years I’ve also been a member of the Larry Coryell trio touring all over the world.

This new recording captures the freedom that I’ve enjoyed playing in a trio format. The instruments used were 5 string Pedulla MVP5 signature fretless and fretted. The direct boxes are Radial JDI into two Focusrite 430 mic pres recorded into Protools 192 I/O using Motu DP4.6 software. My goal was to really feature my fretless bass with extensive soloing.
