Remembering Doug Lunn 1954 – 2017

On January 30, 2018 fretless bass player Doug Lunn would have turned 64 years old. Sadly he passed away February 11, 2017 after a battle with cancer. A close family friend reached out to me to remember Doug, and to look for any info that I might be able to contribute, as he was planning to put together a website celebrating Doug’s life and music. I was surprised, but also honored, to find out that FretlessBass.com was one of the few (if not the only) websites that had published the bio that Doug had sent me nine years ago. I was also shocked to find out that there was no Wikipedia page created for Doug.

Doug Lunn specialized in the 5-string fretless bass. His contributions to music were extensive, playing with top artists that include Bruce Springsteen, Mark Isham, David Torn, Andy Summers, Sting, Steven Stills, Buddy Guy, Jerry Cantrell, Brian Adams, and Mike Keneally (just to name a few), creating his own projects, as well as being in the house band for the “Dennis Miller Show” and appearing on numerous film and TV soundtracks.

Doug and I had exchanged emails over the years, starting when he generously agreed to do the “Fretless Questions” interview for my site in January of 2009. Though I didn’t know him well, I sensed that he was a very humble man, incredibly talented but quite modest considering he didn’t even have a personal website or a Wikipedia page. I was more than happy to provide info, pictures he had sent me, and my support to a project that would celebrate this amazing musician.

The result of this project is a remembrance website which can be found at art101.com/douglunn. This is a fantastic site that includes photos, videos, interviews, remembrances from those who loved and worked with Doug, and more. There is also a long overdue Wikipedia page in the works.

It has been a privilege to help with this project and to play a small part in sharing this amazing musician with the world through FretlessBass.com. Please join us and his family and friends celebrating the life of Doug Lunn.
