I got this 1978 Fender fretless maple P Bass neck off eBay. It was straight and had no tuning keys, nor string retainer but I got it for less than 1/5th of what I recently saw on eBay Germany.
I put it for some time on a jazz body I had but decided to get a P bass body to compliment this neck. So I purchased a 2005 Mexican FSR fretted P Bass with an ash body. I unbolt it before even playing it and bolted the fretless P Bass neck on. This bass was born. I sold the fretted neck attached to the jazz body I had. It came with a plastic mirror pickguard that looks stunning. Only mod I did after putting it together was changing to tone control for a home made 4 way rotary switch tonestyler.
The neck is quite big and can be sticky, but the whole instrument has a thick punchy sound with very little high end. Example of how it sounds live in a pub : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAunFezL4jk
It has always had flat wound strings like all my fretless basses, but I could use some black tape wound strings to make it sound more like a double bass. I should try this one day…
